Alex Neil once said that ‘marriage is about love, not gender,’ and this short quote has a great impact, encompassing and unveiling the normalcy of sexuality perfectly.
No one should be afraid to reveal who they are. No one should worry about showing their love and for someone. No one deserves hate for having the courage to be an unapologetically true version of themselves. Everyone deserves a chance at true love, irrespective of who it is with.
Sexuality isn’t a choice. Being homosexual isn’t something one can choose; it’s a part of them. It is not something they need to apologize for. We need to understand that it isn’t just a phase, and it certainly isn’t a mental illness. If one can question homosexuality, why can’t they question heterosexuality? Who says being gay is wrong when being straight is acceptable?
Sexuality is a beautiful puzzle that is designed by our genes. Factors such as exposure to our community or peer pressure are not causes of homosexuality; it doesn’t influence one’s sexual orientation. It is not something learned from your peers or a ‘bad habit’ developed from those that surround you.
Who said marriage was supposed to be between a man and a woman? Relationships are shaped by an individual’s love, trust, appreciation, and understanding of their significant other. And no, one can’t simply decide someone’s sexual orientation by their appearance or their actions. No one has the right to falsely assume another’s personality.
Homosexuality isn’t a sin and it cannot be considered a crime. People in the community shouldn’t be denied their rights for any reason, whether it be religion or tradition, or sexual orientation. Everyone deserves their rights, irrespective of factors that ‘define who they are’.
Why are people forced to succumb to society’s rules of what is right and what isn’t? Everyone should be able to express themselves and show off their true colors with pride and happiness. They have a right to be who they are. They shouldn’t feel scared to come out of the closet. They deserve a life filled with happiness, love, and support- one free of hatred and sorrow. Because everyone deserves to soar high with the wind beneath their wings of color.
