Sushi – Roll It Up!

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about Japan? About 99% of the time, it’s sushi! And if you’re like me, then it’s definitely sushi! This traditional Japanese dish, prepared with sticky, vinegared rice, is a delicacy out of this world! Not only is it a sensory experience like you’ve never had before, it can also be eaten at any time with no regrets!

Whether it’s at breakfast or a midnight snack for 2 am, you can find and devour sushi whenever! While origins of sushi descend from versions with fish, people have modernised the sushi to incorporate everyone’s tastes, including vegetarian sushi which sometimes far surpass the “traditional” ones!

Sumeshi – the Japanese word for “sushi rice” – forms the main body of the sushi. It defines the taste and makes it stand out in front of any other rice-dish! Soy Sauce and Ginger Sleets are usually served alongside the sushi, but the real taste elevator is the Wasabi, a green, spicy, semi-solid that changes the game. It stimulates the taste buds and ensures that you can enjoy the whole flavour of this Japanese dish. But, beware! If you ever eat too much Wasabi, the nose burn is intense! Worry not, though! I have a solution for you! Instead of breathing through your mouth like we usually do when we find something spicy, breathe heavily through your nose. In the next 10 seconds, the intensity will wear off and you’ll be left teary-eyed, ready for your next taste of Wasabi.

Sushi was first introduced by Hanaya Yohei in the 1820’s, but its global reach today is immense! A dish that originated in one corner of the world is now one that stands out in even the remotest of areas. And just imagine! What if Mr Yohei never brought in the sushi? I don’t think I’d be able to survive without this delicacy in my life. And please, next time you’re with me, feel free to roll up a sushi for me!
