Music & Its Impact On Sleep

Here, let’s start off with a fun fact about music. Listening to music while sleeping matches the beats of the song to our breathing and heart rate. Do you recall your parents singing lullabies to you as a child to help you sleep? Well, listening to music while sleeping is essentially the same thing.

How does music help you sleep better?

In addition to calming your body with its gentle melody, listening to music, especially a song that is within 60 to 80 beats per minute, close to the pace of a heartbeat, lets your body know that it needs to rest since our bodies are accustomed to dozing off when they hear relaxing music.

Furthermore, it is also proven that listening to music helps you fall asleep more quickly because the melody takes the stress off of your mind, giving your tired brain something else to focus on. Studies show that people with insomnia are able to fall asleep a lot faster whilst listening to music.

Songs that we enjoy release Serotonin and Dopamine, more commonly known as the happy and the feel-good hormone, making it a lot easier to go to sleep. It also stops the stress hormone, Cortisol, from keeping you up at night. According to research, if a song is playing in the background, you are more likely to hear music in your dreams. How cool is that, that our brain wires to the sound of music?
