Novak Djokovic dropped by four places in the ATP ranking despite his Wimbledon Win. His victory over a feisty Nick Kyrgios earned him his sixth Wimbledon title. However, in this week’s ATP rankings, the 35-year-old Serbian fell four spots from 3rd to 7th when the ATP decided not to award any ranking points at this year’s Wimbledon (as a result of the All England Club’s decision to exclude players from Russia and Belarus).
The leader remains Russian Daniil Medvedev, who was disqualified from Wimbledon, and for the first time in 25 years, Roger Federer couldn’t place himself in the ATP rankings.
Federer didn’t gain any points for his matches from Wimbledon 2017, and the rankings only consider points earned in the preceding 52 weeks. On the other hand, Djokovic acknowledged that he was hesitant to compete in the US Open due to the mandatory vaccination requirement.
At a press conference in Belgrade, Djokovic stated that he was unable to travel to the US. “I’m waiting for good news,” he said, “but time is running out, I don’t know, hope springs eternal. I’d prefer to participate in the US Open, but if that doesn’t happen, it won’t be the first Grand Slam, and it won’t be the end of the world either.” He is second in the men’s category only to Rafael Nadal, who has 22 Grand Slam victories.
